Thank you for booking your newborn session with me—I'm truly honoured to capture these first tender moments of your baby’s life.
This is such a special and fleeting time, and I’m here to make sure your session is calm, comfortable, and memorable for both you and your little one.
To help you feel fully prepared and at ease on the day, I’ve put together this guide with everything you need to know for your newborn photoshoot.
What to Expect
Your newborn session is all about capturing the sweet, tender moments of your little one’s first days and celebrating your beautiful new family.
Session Length:
Newborn sessions typically last 2–4 hours, giving us plenty of time to create a calm, relaxed environment for both baby and parents. Every baby is different, so we follow their lead throughout the session.
Pacing & Comfort:
This is a brand-new experience for your little one, so we go slow and gentle. Whether it’s feeding, cuddling, or changing, breaks are part of the process to ensure baby feels safe and comfortable at every step.
Posing & Props:
We’ll photograph your baby in a variety of sweet poses using carefully selected blankets, wraps, and props. Most babies are most comfortable when held or supported by their parents, so we’ll work together to capture these tender, authentic moments.
At-Home or Studio:
Sessions can take place in our studio with controlled lighting and setups, or in the comfort of your home, which often helps baby feel more relaxed. You can choose the option that works best for your family.
Personal Touches:
If you have specific props, outfits, or shots you’d like, feel free to share them — I love incorporating meaningful items to make your session unique.
Clothing, Prep & Comfort
For your newborn session, we’ll be capturing both styled portraits of your baby as well as beautiful family moments—so it’s important that everyone comes feeling relaxed and prepared.
What to Wear:
Please arrive dressed in the outfits you’d like to wear for the family portion of the shoot. Neutral tones and soft colours work best, as they keep the focus on your connection and your little one. Avoid clothing with bold patterns or logos for a timeless look. If you’d like to bring an extra outfit for yourself or your partner, you’re more than welcome to.
For your baby, we’ll be styling them in some of our soft, cozy newborn outfits and wraps for the individual portraits and prop setups. However, please bring at least one outfit of your own for baby as well—something you love or holds special meaning.
What to Pack:
- A bottle (if your baby is bottle-fed)
- A dummy/pacifier -it helps with soothing during the session
- A burp cloth or small towel for any spills or feeding moments
- Snacks and water for yourselves (it’s a long session and parents need fuel too!)
- Any extra clothing you’d like to use or change into during the shoot
Session Flow:
We aim to keep the studio warm and calm to help your baby feel comfortable and sleepy. The session usually lasts 2–4 hours, as we take our time and move at baby’s pace. Ideally, we’ll start with your baby’s individual portraits while they’re sleepy, and then move to family photos once they’re more alert—but every baby is different, and we always go with the flow.
Feeding & Comfort:
If you need to breastfeed during the session, please know that it’s absolutely welcome and encouraged. We’re happy to give you some privacy if you’d prefer, or you’re more than welcome to feed in the studio space while we gently prepare for the next set. Your comfort—and your baby’s—is our top priority.
A Gentle Reminder:
Try to keep baby awake for a little while before the session if possible, and give them a full feed just before arriving or once we settle in—that often helps them fall into a nice deep sleep for the first part of the shoot.
During the Session
Comfort & Safety First:
Your baby’s comfort is our absolute priority. We work at a gentle pace and follow your baby’s lead throughout the entire session. If your little one needs a break, a feed, or just some cuddles—we’ll pause and give them the time they need.
Clean & Prepared Environment:
Our studio is cleaned before each session, and we always use hand sanitizer to ensure a safe, hygienic space for your newborn. Most of our props are set up on the floor for safety and ease, and we make sure everything your baby touches is soft, clean, and cozy.
Posing Baby Gently:
We will carefully guide your baby into natural, curled-up poses that showcase how tiny and precious they are. Don’t worry—everything is done slowly and safely, with your baby’s comfort in mind. If baby resists a pose or seems unsettled, we simply move on and adjust accordingly.
Your Involvement:
You’re welcome to relax and watch, or jump in and help soothe baby between setups. For the family portion of the shoot, we’ll guide you through some gentle, loving poses with your baby—nothing forced, just natural and beautiful connections.
What to Expect:
Expect a calm, quiet atmosphere where we go with the flow. Sometimes baby might be sleepy and still, other times alert and wiggly—we embrace it all and work around what baby needs in the moment.
Just Relax:
You don’t have to worry about what to do—we’ve got it covered. We’ll direct you every step of the way during family photos and help ensure that everyone feels relaxed and confident. Let go of the stress and enjoy this precious bonding time with your new little love.
Including Your Loved Ones
Welcoming a new baby is such a special time for the whole family, and we’re more than happy to include your loved ones in this beautiful experience!
Our newborn sessions can take place in our cozy studio or in the comfort of your home, wherever your family feels most relaxed. In the studio, we’ve created a calm, soothing environment, with gentle music to help your little one settle. At home, we work around your baby’s familiar surroundings to keep them comfortable and happy.
If you’re bringing young children or siblings, consider packing something to keep them entertained—like a favorite toy, an iPad with a show or game, or a small activity—so they stay busy while we focus on photographing baby. When it’s time for family photos, we’ll gently guide them in to join the session.
We usually begin with baby on their own, then move on to mom, dad, and baby, and finally the full family. If you’d like specific combinations—siblings together, grandparents with baby, or even three generations—let us know ahead of time so we can plan for them.
There is a small additional fee of R100 per extra person, which includes a few extra photos with your loved ones—giving you even more precious memories to take home.
These early days are fleeting, and it’s our absolute joy to help you preserve this chapter with the people who matter most.
Location Details
Studio Sessions:
Our studio setup includes a beautiful selection of props, wraps, and accessories for baby, as well as the option to do some lifestyle-style photos in our studio space. It’s perfect for capturing dreamy, posed photos of baby, as well as those heartfelt family moments in a clean, comfortable environment. I’ll send you the exact location closer to the time of your session.
Home Sessions (Lifestyle Only):
If you’d prefer, I can also come to your home for a lifestyle session. These sessions are more relaxed and candid, using your own home environment and personal touches. While we won’t bring the full prop setup, we’ll still focus on capturing beautiful solo shots of baby and tender family connections in your unique space.
Parking:
We offer free and secure parking on-site, so you don’t have to worry about safety or accessibility on the day of your shoot.
Refreshments:
We also have light water and refreshments available at the studio to keep you comfortable and hydrated during your session.
If you choose to have your session at home, just let me know where you’re based—please note, a travel fee may apply for locations more than 50km from Randpark Ridge.
No matter the setting, the goal is to capture this special season in a calm, relaxed way that reflects the love and warmth of your family.
After the Session
Album Turnaround
Your edited images will be ready in 2-3 weeks. Each photo is thoughtfully edited to ensure it’s perfect, highlighting every beautiful moment.
Sneak Peeks
After about 2 weeks, we’ll send you a sneak peek to give you a preview while we put the finishing touches on your full gallery!
Minimum Images
You’ll receive a minimum of 30 edited images, each carefully crafted to tell the story of your beautiful journey.
